Double the money for your Skate Swaps!!!

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

1491figure_skatesA Skate Swap is a popular fundraiser where clubs or teams set a time and place where their members can sell skating items they are no longer using to other members. Usually, the club or team keeps a portion of each sale.

How would your figure skating club or team like to continue making money after the day of your skate swap?  Here is the scoop on an easy way to do just that!

Step 1: When items are checked at your skate swap, ask the sellers if they would be interested in selling their items on MySkatingMall.com if their items don’t sell during the skate swap. Collect $1 from those who are interested.  This $1 will be used for the listing fee or returned if their item sells during the skate swap.

Step 2:  Find a club or team member who is handy with a digital camera and shopping on the internet.  Many clubs have service hours that members are required to fulfill each year. This person can earn her volunteer hours by taking home items that did not sell during the skate swap and listing them on MySkatingMall.com. When the items sell, this person would need to ship them out promptly to the buyer.

Send us an email at info@myskatingmall.com if you would like us to help you with raising more money from your Skate Swaps. We would be delighted to help.

Skate-a-thons = Easy Money for your Club or Team

Monday, April 18th, 2011

cartoonskaterMySkatingMall.com is interested in promoting any idea that will raise needed money for your skating club, team, or charity.  That is why we would like to present to you the idea of organizing a Skate-a-thon.

Skate-a-thons are fundraisers in which participants secure pledges in the hopes of earning money for your club or team by skating laps around the ice rink. During Skate-a-thons, skaters are often given either a set amount of time in which to skate as many laps as they can, or a set maximum number of laps to complete. For example: in a one hour time frame allowing a maximum of 100 laps skated. Prior to the Skate-a-thon, participants are encouraged to secure pledges from businesses, family, friends, and neighbors. These can be either a per lap pledge, or a straight dollar amount pledge.

In addition to the fundraising aspect of Skate-a-thons, events such as these give figure skating clubs and teams the opportunity to combine skating with a fun, social event that ultimately boosts club spirit! Skate-a-thons that are designed to raise funds for charities boost club spirit, offer a tax deduction for the donors and at the same time increase community awareness of the group, cause and ice skating itself!

Typically, $3,000-$5,000 can be raised per Skate-a-thon. Groups would need to design a pledge sheet, assign counters for the skaters doing laps, and create prizes to encourage your skaters in their fundraising. It should be a party atmosphere! Frequently, the ice rink will donate an hour of ice if you use their name in advertising or just because they want to support the cause. The local radio station may also be interested in picking up the event, especially if half the profits are shared with a charity such as the Special Olympics.

If you would like more information to help your group organize a Skate-a-thon, comment on this blog and we will help you along!

Help Close The Loop Hole

Picture 1

It has been such a pleasure over the last 11 months being involved with MySkatingMall.com as we have raised over $1,600 for figure skating clubs, teams, and charities!

We are having one reoccurring problem that we need your help to fix. Since PayPal is new to many people, quite often there has been trouble completing payment at the time of purchase.  When the buyer or seller does not know how to “fix” their PayPal account issues, they often are completing payment outside of the MySkatingMall.com system. This denies the site and charities the commissions due on the sale.

This fact is not widely known and and we are sure no one is doing it on purpose. It is not like the buyer is saving any money; all that is happening is that 10% of the sale price is not being shared by MySkatingMall.com and the skating groups of the buyer and seller.

This is our simple plea: If you have bought an item and for whatever reason payment was not completed immediately after purchase, do not “Send Money” directly to the seller or pay a “Money request” from the seller through PayPal. If you are a seller, please do not send a “Money request” directly to the buyer or suggest the buyer pay you directly.

So how do you complete the transaction?  Follow these steps:

1) Log into your MySkatingMall.com account.
2)Click on the “my purchases” link located at the bottom left portion of the page. You may need to scroll down your screen in order to see it.
3) The item(s) you have purchased will then be listed in the middle of the screen. Click on the yellow PayPal button next to the title of each item to complete payment through PayPal.
4)Complete all of PayPal’s steps until you reach the “Your payment has been sent” screen.

Our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) tab at the top of the MySkatingMall.com homepage also includes directions to solve common PayPal problems. If these resources do not fix your problem, we are happy to assist you when you send  an email to admin@myskatingmall.com.

P.S. Great News!!! MySkatingMall.com has reached a major milestone. There are now over 3,000 figure skating dresses, boots, blades, accessories and more listed for sale.

P.S.S. Reminder: Our $1 per item per year listing fee begins next month.  Even though this is more than the free listings over the last year, it is much less than the $.50 monthly fee that eBay is currently charging.

New Feature Added To Skating Club & Team Accounts!!!

Picture 1Each skating group registered to raise funds through MySkatingMall.com can now see a list of every transaction that raised money for the group! The picture on the left is a screen shot from a club that is already benefiting from MySkatingMall.com.

We added this feature as a further sign of our desire for transparency and honesty in our relationships with figure skating clubs and teams.  This list allows your group to “audit” us and verify for yourselves that we are consistently keeping our word.

Additional features of the Club & Team Accounts include:

• See which MySkatingMall.com members have joined up with your group

• Send auto-filled invitations by email to your club or team members

• Print an auto-filled poster with your group’s name for you to display or email out to members

• Get an auto-filled sample email to send out to group members in order to launch your fund raising campaign

Use the “Invite a Club Member” function to easily add to your team – the more sales your members participate in, the more funds that are raised for your group. Funds from sales on MySkatingMall.com are being distributed to other skating groups right now!

There is NO COST for skating clubs, teams, and charities to raise funds on MySkatingMall.com.  Don’t leave money on the table by sitting on the sidelines.  Register your group today through this link: Club and Team Registration

If your group is already registered, begin using the resources in your Club & Team account to get your members involved. It will likely take several reminders to encourage them to take action but it will be well worth the effort.

Please feel free to contact us at info@myskatingmall.com if you have any questions or concerns about raising funds for your skating club or team through MySkatingMall.com.

How MySkatingMall.com Helps You Support Grassroots Skating

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

Grassroots

MySkatingMall.com was created to help meet pressing needs that have developed in the skating community. For example, a large number of skating families are struggling in this economy to keep up with the expense of skating. Clubs and teams are having difficulty raising enough funds to support their members. Also, there previously was no central place customized to figure skating to buy and sell high quality skating items that are no longer in use.

 A founding principle of MySkatingMall.com is that a minimum of 5% of every purchase will be given to grassroots skating groups. That is half of all the commissions collected!

 When an item is being listed on MySkatingMall.com, the seller can choose for 2.5% to 92.5% of the sale price to be automatically forwarded to the PayPal account of her/his club, team, or favorite skating charity upon the sale of the item. (2.5% also goes to the club or team of the buyer.) For example, if a club can get five of its members to list $50 skating dresses and choose for 90% of the proceeds to go to the club, then the club will have $225 in its PayPal account when all 5 of those dresses sell!

 Following the Money Trail

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is common wisdom that following where the money goes tells the true story about an organization. That is why we created two flowcharts that describe exactly how money gets distributed when purchases occur on MySkatingMall.com.  One chart is for Used Purchases and the second is for Partner Store Purchases. Please click on this link to see these charts and learn what makes MySkatingMall.com unique among all other skating sites:
How It Works
In addition to these automatic donations, 5% of every purchase you make from our Partner Stores (their logos are at the bottom of the MySkatingMall.com homepage), will be given to your club, team, or charity.
Club and Team Registration
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Registration is fast and free at http://www.myskatingmall.com/clubs for all skating clubs, synchro teams, and theatre on ice teams who want to raise funds through MySkatingMall.com. Any group from around the world is eligible as long as it can be verified. It does not cost even one cent for groups to register! All groups will need to register before they can receive the 2.5%-92.5% funding from the transactions of their members. More details are available through our Club/Team FAQs.

Please tell your club and team about this great opportunity!

Professional Skaters Association Endorses MySkatingMall.com!

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

LogoEndorsement

This is one of the most exciting developments that has occurred to date for MySkatingMall.com!  The Professional Skaters Association, usually referred to as the PSA, has chosen to endorse MySkatingMall.com.  The PSA is the official coaches education and certification organization for U.S. Figure Skating and the Ice Skating Institute. Coaches from all over the world belong to the PSA in order to enhance their coaching skills.

In order to receive this endorsement, MySkatingMall.com had to be vetted by a committee of PSA members. They were charged with the task to determine if the site was indeed what it claimed to be and if MySkatingMall.com was in the best interest of coaches and their students.  I am pleased to report that MySkatingMall.com really does support the skating community by allowing people to earn money by selling quality used skating items, to purchase gently used items at steep discounts from new prices, and purchase new items from many skating retailers; all while raising money for grassroots skating clubs and teams with every transaction!

If you have been holding off giving MySkatingMall.com a serious look for your skating club, synchro team, or TOI team due to its newness or lack of established credibility, I hope this will give you the nudge you need to move forward.  We welcome groups from Canada, the U.S., and any other country that would like to participate in our fund raising.

Please help spread the word that MySkatingMall.com is here to help to others in the skating community whenever you get the chance.  Thank you!

Skating Magazine Features MySkatingMall.com

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

The article “Bargain deals can be found at www.myskatingmall.com” was recently published on page 44 in the August/September 2010 issue of Skating Magazine! Skating Magazine is the official publication  of U.S. Figure Skating so I am extremely excited that MySkatingMall.com received mention.skating_mag_junejuly2010cvr_medium

The issue highlights Olympian pair skaters Amanda Evora and Mark Ladwig on the front cover. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find the cover picture for this newsletter:-)

Below is the text from the article in case you don’t have your magazine handy:

“Former U.S. bronze medalist and PSA master-rated coach Ryan Jahnke credits a conversation he had with his father for a new web site that offers the skating community bargain deals on new and used equipment and attire.

“These outfits are in great shape; there has to be somewhere to sell them,” Jahnke’s father told his son one day while looking at a heaping pile of skating-related items that had collected over the years in a closet.

Jahnke took his father’s words to heart, and with his entrepreneurial instincts, founded www.myskatingmall.com.

The web site offers an international marketplace to buy and sell new and used skating items, with an added perk of supporting U.S. Figure Skating teams, clubs and the Memorial Fund as part of the online transaction.

“It is there to open up the closets of all competitive skaters in the world so people are not limited to only buying new items,” Jahnke said.

As a former athlete board member of U.S. Figure Skating and as a coach at the Broadmoor Skating Club in Colorado Springs, Colo., Jahnke sees first-hand how difficult it is for individual skaters and teams to meet the financial demands of the sport.

As a remedy to this dilemma, Jahnke used his recently earned degrees in finance and information systems to help launch www.myskatingmall.com. Behind his own money, Jahnke hired web-design pros to develop the site, which he manages on a daily basis.

More than 200 people [currently 397] have registered to buy and sell products on the web site since its launch in March. Jahnke, in fact, sold both his costumes from the 2003 campaign, in which he won the U.S. bronze medal and earned a spot on the World Team.

Unlike other online retail stores, www.myskatingmall.com is a perpetual fundraising opportunity. Those individuals who purchase items from the web site can designate a portion of the purchase price for a club, a team or the Memorial Fund.

“It’s free to register for an account and all the resources are right there to help you [clubs and teams] begin a hassle-free fundraising campaign,” Jahnke said.

Of more than 200 members to date [currently 397], 65 [currently 145] have chosen the Memorial Fund as the beneficiary of their transactions.

“This is something the skating community has needed for a long time,” Olympic champion Brian Boitano said. “I love that it will help many people keep skating and support grassroots clubs and teams at the same time.”  -Jenny Walter
