Read the Important U.S. Figure Skating Rule Changes

Sunday, May 1st, 2011

2011GCLogo_160x121          U.S. Figure Skating’s annual Governing Council meeting has just concluded in Lombard, IL. Many new rules that affect skaters are coming into effect. Many of the significant rule changes are listed below.

 Junior Nationals Restructured:

Junior Nationals will no longer (starting in 2013) be its own event with skaters qualifying through their Regional championships.  It is changing in the following ways:

 1. The four best-placed competitors in the intermediate and juvenile singles events in each region will qualify to enter the appropriate sectional championship.  This will give young skaters a better understanding of how they will need to qualify for the National Championships in higher levels.

2. The current U.S. Junior Championships stand-alone event will be replaced with a smaller national competition for juvenile and intermediate athletes held in conjunction with the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. This is a wonderful change since Junior National competitors will now be at “big nationals” and can get inspired by the nation’s top skaters in the higher levels.

3. The four best-placed competitors in all intermediate and juvenile events (singles, pairs and ice dancing) from each section qualify to enter the national competition mentioned in item 2 above.

This change to Junior Nationals will not go into place this year but in competitive year 2013.  There will still be a Junior Nationals in December this year and skaters will advance directly from Regionals.

 Novice Ladies Short Program is replacing the fixed Base Value spiral sequence with a leveled step sequence.
Novice Well-Balanced Free Skate is replacing the option of a fixed Base Value spiral or a fixed Base Value choreographed step sequence with a leveled step sequence.
Novice Well-Balanced Free Skate is  allowing one additional triple jump to be repeated for novice men and to limit each double (and triple) jump to appear no more than twice for novice men and novice ladies (i.e. can repeat as many doubles as they like, but each can appear no more than two times in a program).
Novice Men Short Program now has a change of foot in the camel or sit spin.

Intermediate Short Program, Intermediate Well-Balanced Free Skate and Juvenile/Open Juvenile Well-Balanced Free Skate to replace the leveled step sequence with a fixed Base Value choreographed step sequence.
Intermediate Well-Balanced Free Skate to limit the number of spins to two. One spin must be a combination spin with at least one change of position, and one spin must be a spin in one position with no change of foot. Both spins may have a flying entry.

Juvenile: Increased the age for juvenile to “under age 14 as of Sept. 1 prior to the regional championships.” This means skaters have an additional year before they need to begin competing in Open Juvenile.

Juvenile/Open Juvenile Well-Balanced Free Skate to limit the number of spins to two. One spin must be a combination spin with at least one change of position, and one spin mus tbe a spin in one position with no change of foot. Both spins may have a flying entry.

Pre-Juvenile Well-Balanced Free Skate to limit the number of spins to two. One spin must be a combination spin with at least one change of position (minimum six revolutions total), and one spin must be a spin in one position with no change of foot (minimum four revolutions). Both spins may have a flying entry.

The following levels can now only have two jump combinations and sequences in their programs instead of three:

  • Juvenile/Open Juvenile Well-Balanced Free Skate
  • Pre-Juvenile Well-Balanced Free Skate
  • Preliminary Well-Balanced Free Skate
  • Pre-Preliminary Well-Balanced Free Skate
  • No Test Well-Balanced Free Skate

The following levels can NOT do a three jump combination in their program, only two jump combos are allowed:

  • Juvenile/Open Juvenile Well-Balanced Free Skate
  • Pre-Juvenile Well-Balanced Free Skate
  • Preliminary Well-Balanced Free Skate
  • Pre-Preliminary Well-Balanced Free Skate
  • Test Well-Balanced Free Skate

Adults Competition:

1) The maximum number of spins allowed in the championships masters junior-senior, masters senior and masters junior well-balanced free skate events is reduced from four to three.
2) The maximum number of jumps allowed in the championships masters intermediate-novice, masters novice and masters intermediate well-balanced free skate events is reduced from seven to six.
3) The maximum number of jump elements allowed in the championship adult gold and adult gold well-balanced free skate events is reduced from six to five.
4) The Championships Masters Junior-Senior, Championship Masters Intermediate-Novice, Masters Senior, Masters Junior, Masters Novice, Masters Intermediate, Championship Adult Gold and Adult Gold well-balanced program requirements have been amended to allow the option of a choreographed step sequence or a choreographed spiral sequence.
5) The IJS system for championship, masters and gold levels of singles events will be used at adult sectional championships!!!  This is great news for many adult skaters.

Make sure to start making these changes to programs right away!  Unless mentioned otherwise, these changes go into effect in competitions starting June 1, 2011.

Please leave a comment below if you have an opinion or questions about these changes. Ryan Jahnke attended the Governing Council meeting and can answer questions about how these changes came about.

Skate-a-thons = Easy Money for your Club or Team

Monday, April 18th, 2011

cartoonskaterMySkatingMall.com is interested in promoting any idea that will raise needed money for your skating club, team, or charity.  That is why we would like to present to you the idea of organizing a Skate-a-thon.

Skate-a-thons are fundraisers in which participants secure pledges in the hopes of earning money for your club or team by skating laps around the ice rink. During Skate-a-thons, skaters are often given either a set amount of time in which to skate as many laps as they can, or a set maximum number of laps to complete. For example: in a one hour time frame allowing a maximum of 100 laps skated. Prior to the Skate-a-thon, participants are encouraged to secure pledges from businesses, family, friends, and neighbors. These can be either a per lap pledge, or a straight dollar amount pledge.

In addition to the fundraising aspect of Skate-a-thons, events such as these give figure skating clubs and teams the opportunity to combine skating with a fun, social event that ultimately boosts club spirit! Skate-a-thons that are designed to raise funds for charities boost club spirit, offer a tax deduction for the donors and at the same time increase community awareness of the group, cause and ice skating itself!

Typically, $3,000-$5,000 can be raised per Skate-a-thon. Groups would need to design a pledge sheet, assign counters for the skaters doing laps, and create prizes to encourage your skaters in their fundraising. It should be a party atmosphere! Frequently, the ice rink will donate an hour of ice if you use their name in advertising or just because they want to support the cause. The local radio station may also be interested in picking up the event, especially if half the profits are shared with a charity such as the Special Olympics.

If you would like more information to help your group organize a Skate-a-thon, comment on this blog and we will help you along!

Be among the first to enjoy this free 5 minute video with your friends

Picture 1 Our latest video is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face and encourage you! Just click on this link and enjoy: “What’s so great about figure skating?”

If you like it, would you consider sharing it with your friends? Posting it on social networking pages or sending the link to the video over email would do the trick.

Why bother? Maybe you know a skater who is not sure she wants to continue skating because of the struggle to land an axel. Maybe you know skating parents who have lost sight of why to support their children through the rigors of skating. This video is full of skaters and parents at all levels of skating taking a moment to look at the big picture of why they love figure skating. Most people who have participated in figure skating for a while have had times where they have asked themselves, “Why am I doing this?” Let’s face it, figure skating is not easy on parents, skaters, or coaches. But that challenge is the source of what makes it so worth while!!! Don’t take my word for it….watch this video for yourself and hear from other people just like you.

The skating community really came together to produce this video. MySkatingMall.com received video uploads from all over North America answering the question, “What’s so great about figure skating?”. If you remember, we held a raffle with the names of all the people who submitted videos for this project. We are pleased to announce that Vincent Smentkowski of the Albany Figure Skating Club is the winner of a $100 discount to MySkatingMall.com!

$812.38 Raised for the U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund!

Friday, March 4th, 2011

MemFund_color

  We were so close!

The MySkatingMall.com community set a goal to raise $1,000 for the U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund before the release of the film RISE.   The activity of 220 MySkatingMall.com members and a couple dress sales by 2010 U.S. Champion and Olympian Rachael Flatt    enabled MySkatingMall.com to send in a $812.38 check.

To be honest, my competitively wired brain points out that we failed to hit the goal.  But really???  $812 to support the competitive and acedemic endeavors of worthy skaters can never be a failure!  Part of the beauty of goals is that they get one to move in the right direction.  The money MySkatingMall.com just sent to the Memorial Fund is the first of MANY checks.  Money will be raised for the Fund as long as some members of MySkatingMall.com choose to support the Memorial Fund with their purchases and sales.

“U.S. Figure Skating is deeply grateful to MySkatingMall.com for all of their efforts to provide affordable and accessible access to figure skating clothing and accessories to skaters throughout the country.  Additionally, U.S. Figure Skating applauds  MySkatingMall.com’s efforts to raise contributions for the Memorial Fund, our largest financial assistance vehicle available for the support of figure skaters to succeed on and off the ice.  Every dollar, every donation – supports skaters from Juvenile to Senior and their dreams of becoming champions!” wrote Stacey Marsh, Director of Development for U.S. Figure Skating.

Memorial Fund Committee Chair Leslie Gianelli added, “I am so impressed with the creativity and ingenuity of MySkatingMall.com, and very grateful for your ongoing support of the Memorial Fund. Your very generous donation both honors the legacy of the 1961 World Figure Skating Team and helps today’s skaters realize their hopes and dreams.”

I love “feel good” emails, don’t you?

For all you Facebook users out there, the following link will take you to video of Rachael Flatt being interviewed at the World Figure Skating Museum. She speaks about her efforts to give back to skating through the Memorial Fund:  Rachael Flatt interview on Facebook

Make a direct donation to the U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund

You can give a gift online using the Fund’s secure online giving site at: U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund Online Giving.  If you text more than type, text  SKATE to 50555 on your mobile phone and contribute $10 up to three times. Lastly, you can send a check via snail mail to:  U.S. Figure Skating, Memorial Fund, 20 First Street, Colorado Springs, CO 80906

P.S. Important Reminder

A small $1 per item listing fee will be invoiced through PayPal in the next couple of days for all items currently being sold on MySkatingMall.com. Help Close The Loop Hole

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Picture 1

It has been such a pleasure over the last 11 months being involved with MySkatingMall.com as we have raised over $1,600 for figure skating clubs, teams, and charities!

We are having one reoccurring problem that we need your help to fix. Since PayPal is new to many people, quite often there has been trouble completing payment at the time of purchase.  When the buyer or seller does not know how to “fix” their PayPal account issues, they often are completing payment outside of the MySkatingMall.com system. This denies the site and charities the commissions due on the sale.

This fact is not widely known and and we are sure no one is doing it on purpose. It is not like the buyer is saving any money; all that is happening is that 10% of the sale price is not being shared by MySkatingMall.com and the skating groups of the buyer and seller.

This is our simple plea: If you have bought an item and for whatever reason payment was not completed immediately after purchase, do not “Send Money” directly to the seller or pay a “Money request” from the seller through PayPal. If you are a seller, please do not send a “Money request” directly to the buyer or suggest the buyer pay you directly.

So how do you complete the transaction?  Follow these steps:

1) Log into your MySkatingMall.com account.
2)Click on the “my purchases” link located at the bottom left portion of the page. You may need to scroll down your screen in order to see it.
3) The item(s) you have purchased will then be listed in the middle of the screen. Click on the yellow PayPal button next to the title of each item to complete payment through PayPal.
4)Complete all of PayPal’s steps until you reach the “Your payment has been sent” screen.

Our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) tab at the top of the MySkatingMall.com homepage also includes directions to solve common PayPal problems. If these resources do not fix your problem, we are happy to assist you when you send  an email to admin@myskatingmall.com.

P.S. Great News!!! MySkatingMall.com has reached a major milestone. There are now over 3,000 figure skating dresses, boots, blades, accessories and more listed for sale.

P.S.S. Reminder: Our $1 per item per year listing fee begins next month.  Even though this is more than the free listings over the last year, it is much less than the $.50 monthly fee that eBay is currently charging.

“What’s so great about figure skating?” Contest Extended

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

Picture 1

Oops, we messed up! Our original directions for participating in the “What’s so great about figure skating?” Video were not very clear. A special “Thank you” to the couple people who brought this to our attention.  The directions for uploading videos to the MySkatingMall.com YouTube page have recently been updated at www.myskatingmall.com/skating .  They now include pictures of where to click in order to upload videos .   Because of the poor directions, we will now be accepting videos until Jan 31!

We could really use a few more uploads in order to make this an awesome video for the skating community!  Take a look at the fully updated directions at www.myskatingmall.com/skating . Through that same link you can watch a quick video that tells what this great contest is all about. We want to hear from skaters, parents, coaches, and anyone who loves skating!

P.S. Anyone who uploads a video will be entered into a drawing for a $100 gift certificate for any item on MySkatingMall.com or through our Partner Stores.

Rachael Flatt Donates Dresses to Support the U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund

Friday, January 7th, 2011

Rachel Flatt picture

2010 U.S. National Champion Rachael Flatt has just donated four of her skating dresses to be  sold on MySkatingMall.com.  The proceeds from the sale of each dress will be given to the U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund.  The Fund has been providing training and academic grants for competitive figure skaters since 1961.

“The Memorial Fund has been amazingly supportive throughout my skating career-something of which I am incredibly appreciative. I felt that donating my dresses and having the proceeds go back to the Memorial Fund was a simple way to give back to an organization that has given me so much over many years!,” explained Rachael.

Wow! That’s the way all athletes should be, don’t you agree? Rachael’s donated dresses include her 2008 “Moon River” Short Program dress that she wore at the Cup of Russia Grand Prix Event as well as many exhibitions.  Three of her practice dresses were also included, all of which are stylish enough to be competition dresses themselves!  You can check them out and purchase them through this link: Rachael’s Skating Dresses  You could also type “Rachael Flatt” into the search box near the top of the page at MySkatingMall.com if the link is not working.

Rachael is the second Team USA member who has donated items to raise money for the U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund. Several of Adam Rippon’s outfits are also available through this link: Adam’s Outfits

“So many Team USA athletes have directly benefited from U.S. Figure Skating’s Memorial Fund,” said Julie Schmitz, Special Projects Manager for U.S. Figure Skating. “Whether it is wearing a RISE t-shirt at the rink, selling costumes on MySkatingMall.com with proceeds going to the Memorial Fund, or using their social media platforms to promote the event, our Team USA athletes have embraced the promotion of RISE with the same passion they put into their skating on a daily basis.”

Along with Team USA members, MySkatingMall.com is still pursuing its goal of raising at least $1,000 for the Memorial Fund by the release of the film RISE in February.  So far, we are at about $250. Take a look at these great outfits through the links above, get amazing skating items for a fraction of what they cost new, and support a great charity!

P.S.   We made a mistake!

The “What’s so great about figure skating?” Contest has been extended until January 31st due to a problem with the video uploading instructions.  Clear directions and information about this $100 contest can be found at: http://www.myskatingmall.com/skating.  We are very sorry for the confusion!  Please take a few minutes to share with the world what you love about figure skating:-)

Adam Rippon Donates Outfits for the Memorial Fund

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

RipponFour Continents Champion and two-time World Junior Champion Adam Rippon has once again demonstrated his class by donating four of his Junior and Novice outfits in order to raise money for the U.S. Memorial Fund. His outfits can be viewed through this link: Adam Rippon on MySkatingMall.com.

Adam’s mom, Kelly, included a short note with the skating outfits: “Thank you, and best of luck with this worthy endeavor”.What worthy endeavor would that be???

MySkatingMall.com has set a goal to raise $1,000 for the U.S. Memorial fund by February 17, 2011.  This date corresponds with the national release of U.S. Figure Skating’s documentary RISE. The film will celebrate American figure skating while commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1961 U.S. World Figure Skating Team that perished in a plane crash on its way to the World Championships in Prague.

The mission of MySkatingMall.com is to support the skating community. We would like to challenge other skaters to follow Adam’s lead by selling their gently used skating dresses, skating outfits, and skating practice apparel on MySkatingMall.com.  You don’t have to be an elite skater to participate! Simply list your items and choose for 87.5% of the sale price to be given to the U.S. Memorial Fund.

Canadian skaters, don’t feel left out! Remember, you have the option to donate directly to the Skate Canada Athlete’s Fund when listing items:-)

How MySkatingMall.com Helps You Support Grassroots Skating

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

Grassroots

MySkatingMall.com was created to help meet pressing needs that have developed in the skating community. For example, a large number of skating families are struggling in this economy to keep up with the expense of skating. Clubs and teams are having difficulty raising enough funds to support their members. Also, there previously was no central place customized to figure skating to buy and sell high quality skating items that are no longer in use.

 A founding principle of MySkatingMall.com is that a minimum of 5% of every purchase will be given to grassroots skating groups. That is half of all the commissions collected!

 When an item is being listed on MySkatingMall.com, the seller can choose for 2.5% to 92.5% of the sale price to be automatically forwarded to the PayPal account of her/his club, team, or favorite skating charity upon the sale of the item. (2.5% also goes to the club or team of the buyer.) For example, if a club can get five of its members to list $50 skating dresses and choose for 90% of the proceeds to go to the club, then the club will have $225 in its PayPal account when all 5 of those dresses sell!

 Following the Money Trail

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is common wisdom that following where the money goes tells the true story about an organization. That is why we created two flowcharts that describe exactly how money gets distributed when purchases occur on MySkatingMall.com.  One chart is for Used Purchases and the second is for Partner Store Purchases. Please click on this link to see these charts and learn what makes MySkatingMall.com unique among all other skating sites:
How It Works
In addition to these automatic donations, 5% of every purchase you make from our Partner Stores (their logos are at the bottom of the MySkatingMall.com homepage), will be given to your club, team, or charity.
Club and Team Registration
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Registration is fast and free at http://www.myskatingmall.com/clubs for all skating clubs, synchro teams, and theatre on ice teams who want to raise funds through MySkatingMall.com. Any group from around the world is eligible as long as it can be verified. It does not cost even one cent for groups to register! All groups will need to register before they can receive the 2.5%-92.5% funding from the transactions of their members. More details are available through our Club/Team FAQs.

Please tell your club and team about this great opportunity!
